International Women’s Day

beautiful-rosesInternational Women’s Day has been observed since in the early

1911 Following the decision agreed at Copenhagen in 1911, International Women’s Day (IWD) was honoured the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March. More than one million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination. However less than a week later on 25 March, the tragic ‘Triangle Fire’ in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working women, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This disastrous event drew significant attention to working conditions and labour legislation in the United States that became a focus of subsequent International Women’s Day events. 1911 also saw women’s ‘Bread and Roses‘ campaign.

1913-1914 On the eve of World War I campaigning for peace, Russian women observed their first International Women’s Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. In 1913 following discussions, International Women’s Day was transferred to 8 March and this day has remained the global date for International Wommen’s Day ever since. In 1914 further women across Europe held rallies to campaign against the war and to express women’s solidarity.

1917 On the last Sunday of February, Russian women began a strike for “bread and peace” in response to the death over 2 million Russian soldiers in war. Opposed by political leaders the women continued to strike until four days later the Czar was forced to abdicate and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote. The date the women’s strike commenced was Sunday 23 February on the Julian calendar then in use in Russia. This day on the Gregorian calendar in use elsewhere was 8 March.

1918 – 1999 Since its birth in the socialist movement, International Women’s Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration across developed and developing countries alike. For decades, IWD has grown from strength to strength annually. For many years the United Nations has held an annual IWD conference to coordinate international efforts for women’s rights and participation in social, political and economic processes.

With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women’s visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.

However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. And so the tone and nature of IWD has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives.

Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements.

In this opportunity, WiA congratulates and celebrates every woman in South Africa and throughout the world.

What do they think of me

Positively-Doubtful1Many women live their life wondering what others think of her. Some go to the point of changing what they really are just to match other people’s opinion on how she should be.

Sad though that many changes are done, external and internal, but not because as a human being they will feel better like this or that but just to agree to the general opinion of society or their interacting group.

At they end of the day, many are frustrated and not fulfilled because they do not look like, behave or live as they would actually enjoy.

There is something I have learnt in my walking with God and it may be the answer or changing of attitude for those who fit in the above examples.

I do enjoy and respect other people’s opinions, suggestions, and observations about myself or about any project I might be working on but I care much more for God’s opinion on my life.

Before making any decision, before planning something, before doing any change on my interior, I wonder what is God thinking about that.

Do you know what God thinks of you? I am going to invite you to hear directly from Him:

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.” (Jeremiah 29:11-12)

God is the source of all goodness in your life, He loves you and cares for you, His plans are to fulfil you – why not to give Him more ears than to criticism and words that constantly put you down?

Experience God’s plans in your life and all changes you might do will only make you whole.

Make Room

pink_roses_2010_calendar-p1584849156706516782xqnz_400My husband makes a remark how we behave when we buy something new but still we want to keep the old one just in case. When we buy a new set of pots, we tend to keep one or two of the old set, which do not look good anyway, just in case we need that later.

When we rationalize about it, we actually see no sense but I know many friends who do the same.

Imagine you are in dear need of a new mattress and when the company delivers the new one, you tell the guys to place it on top of the old one? It will not serve the purpose!

Isn’t the offer good enough?

special_offerWhen we first came to Jesus, we did so seeking for a solution to a series of problems and frustrations that we were living with, but gradually we understood the great need of considering where we want to spend eternity and salvation then should have been our priority seeking purpose.

However, many so dwell in the solution to their problems that they despise totally what is the essence of a Christian Life: eternity with Jesus! It goes beyond of words but it is said on an affirmative action, more like a spiritual strike or bargain: as I do not get what I want, I leave the church.

I am blessed and so are you

UnknownIt’s far easier to look at all the bad things that have happened in our lives. All the words you’ve heard that hurt you so deeply, the affection you didn’t get, the appreciation you never received and all the bad stuff that is engraved in the way you react to people and situations.

It’s easier to look at everything you have lost and the opportunities you have missed and the mistakes you have made.

It’s just easier to look back and see the good things you had in life and not really be happy about them, but instead, simply focus on the fact that you no longer have them.

But to dwell on the good things… that’s not so easy.

How about forgiveness?

6a00d83451d99869e20111688fa328970c-450wiAs we women are so much led by what we feel, we think, we imagine, we constantly face internal conflicts when it comes to forgiveness.

I am not referring to forgiving someone else but to feel forgiven.

We all did, do and will do wrong, say words that we regret five minutes later, take attitudes that will bring consequences for days to come and there we are filling up our centre of emotions with the baggage of guilty and despair.

For some the circle goes on up until they meet Jesus and they experience His forgiveness, and then they become new creatures, lighter inside and invigorated for a new life.

Others will meet Jesus, will be forgiven but will not feel forgiven. Guilty and shame will accompany them inside and outside the church.

Adotpion – When to let them know

evelynLigia asked me a question a few weeks back about when to tell an adopted child the truth about their origins.  I know quite a few adoptive families, grew up among some, and know some now.  I’ve seen parents who have tried different methods of dealing with the subject, but the families that I saw with the happiest, most well-adjusted children were those that were completely honest from the beginning.

This is what I witnessed growing up as a missionary’s daughter in Korea, where a number of other American missionaries had adopted either Korean or American babies.  From what I remember, they treated the fact that they were adopted as a wonderful, beautiful experience that made those children uniquely special.  My mother explained it to me so eloquently about how special a child is who has been specifically chosen by his or her adoptive parents because they were loved and wanted, yet many children who are born into families are not always loved.  Her explanation even made the little 5 year-old me feel jealous and wish I had been adopted too.  I was so disappointed that I wasn’t!

Mrs. Abraham

safe_image.phpBack in 1857, when women practically didn’t have any rights in society, a group of women in a clothing factory in the US decided to protest against the unfair conditions they worked in… no, I don’t mean, the dirt of the place or even the load of work, but simply the 16 hours they were demanded to work daily for a third of the salary that the men, in the same factory and with the same duties earned – not much to ask right?

Well apparently it was a lot to ask for. Around 130 women were locked inside this factory and burned alive. All that came out of that, at the time, was the sad news on all papers… and a century later, an international day for women established on 8 of March of every year.

Spring in your life

springFew Saturdays ago I had a wonderful surprise of having the sun back into our life, so strong, so bright, so warm after this dreadful winter with low temperatures and bad weather.

But you know what? This whole transition marked my year, not physically but spiritually.

It was very captivating to observe the changes in nature and follow closely to each stage of it up until now.

The leaves on trees turned dry and fell off; the lawns looked more like carpets of straw so dried out by the early frost; flower pots were so withered that I could guarantee they would never flourish again; birds were eating dried sticks and branches; poor bees… no flowers to gaze upon.

IT DOES MATTER…. TO YOU!

In the past few days, I have received comments and queries, many out of sheer curiosity, about our reasons for promoting these Cancer Awareness Workshops on a national level.

Does it not contradict our faith?

So I have invited our PR representative, Nametso Mofokeng, WiA member, to interview me in a very direct and frank manner. This is the outcome and it may be the answer to some questions you have in the back of your mind as well:
