HIV and Aids in RSA

6426_largeAn estimated 5.2 million people were living with HIV and AIDS in South Africa in 2008, more than in any other country.1 It is believed that in 2008, over 250,000 South Africans died of AIDS.2

National prevalence is around 11%, with some age groups being particularly affected. Almost one-in-three women aged 25-29, and over a quarter of men aged 30-34, are living with HIV.3

HIV prevalence among those aged two and older also varies by province with the Western Cape (3.8%) and Northern Cape (5.9%) being least affected, and Mpumulanga (15.4%) and KwaZulu-Natal (15.8%) at the upper end of the scale.

The first section is based on the report of the Department of Health “National HIV and Syphilis Sero-prevalence Survey in South Africa 2007″, published in 2008. This annual study looks at data from antenatal clinics and uses it to estimate HIV prevalence amongst pregnant women.

Invest in your health – Detect women’s cancers early

“Cancer is one of the most serious diseases women face. We want all women to care for themselves and, by breast self-examination (BSE) and screening tests, help detect female cancers early, when treatment is more effective” said Sue Janse van Rensburg , CEO of CANSA. “Being proactive against cancer is the greatest gift women can give themselves and their families”.
