WOMEN IN ACTION

Mrs Marcia Pires talks about the vision and mission of Women in Action.

Mrs Marcia Pires, founder of Women in Action (WiA)—a social out-reach group consisting of pastors wives – conveyed special thanks to Kate Turkington, presenter of the show called “Believe it or not” on Radio 702. Mrs Pires had the opportunity to be a guest on the talk-show, which airs on Sundays from 8pm-11pm.

The purpose was for the listeners to find out about WiA projects and the aim of this group.

Mrs Pires said, “I remember talking about doing something in support of our day care centre and the idea of a flea market grew from there. And right there and then, we understood we could not stop. We are convinced that Women in Action offers results so why should we only do something once while there are opportunities to offer a helping hand to many. This is the background story of our formation… It’s very simple but we have committed ourselves to doing it wholeheartedly.”

WiA has achieved much in the past year, being involved in various awareness campaigns and working with the community. These projects helped women discover that they had hidden talents. The projects also helped many women to believe in themselves.

“We cannot change the world but we can surely give back a little bit to our communities and we count on everyone’s support,” said Mrs Pires. “We are using talents, some of which we did not even know we had. “Support our events, and help us out to carry out our mission,” she said. She urged listeners to remember that:

• You can do things you do not believe you are able to.
• You can make an impact wherever you live or work.
• You should take action on whatever plan, dream or situation you face.
• When women take action, results are certain.

International Women’s Day has been observed since in the early

1911 Following the decision agreed at Copenhagen in 1911, International Women’s Day (IWD) was honoured the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March. More than one million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination. However less than a week later on 25 March, the tragic ‘Triangle Fire’ in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working women, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This disastrous event drew significant attention to working conditions and labour legislation in the United States that became a focus of subsequent International Women’s Day events. 1911 also saw women’s ‘Bread and Roses‘ campaign.

1913-1914 On the eve of World War I campaigning for peace, Russian women observed their first International Women’s Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. In 1913 following discussions, International Women’s Day was transferred to 8 March and this day has remained the global date for International Wommen’s Day ever since. Members of WiA from Cape Town have joined the cause and attended to the preparation course to act as Cancer Supporters. They had 04 days of workshops at the offices of CANSA WP and 01 afternoon specifically on Breast Cancer. They completed their race and are now ready to add on emotionally and spiritually to those who are in treatment.

Our members will be volunteering at Tigervalley Hospital shortly. We  take the opportunity to thank Mrs. Dorothy Du Plooy and her teamwork who have welcomed our members and invested time in preparing them for the task. We also thank  Ms Luisa Turner for dedicating her narrow time in the Cape and sharing an afternoon with us.

Thousands of women gathered at the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Alexandra to find out more about improving their health and lifestyle. This special event which ran for three days from 4th to 6th February 2010 was an opportunity for many women to be tested for different types of diseases.

Addressing the crowd, Mrs Marcia Pires, the founder of Women In Action (WiA) said, “There is no sin in looking for a doctor.  They are tools of God and will help you improve the quality of your life.  Once you are empowered, you will make a difference.”

WIA in partnership with the Cancer Association of South Africa, Breast Cancer Foundation and the Health Department will be hosting a Health Project targeting women from Alexandra Community.

There will be counsellors from few other organizations dealing with cancer to offer to the community knowledge about the matter and above all to teach on prevention and early detection.

This initiative is not restricted to the members of our UCKG’s in Alexandra but it is our target to cover the whole location. Mobile units from the government will be brought to the parking lot of our Alex 1 church so that medical exams of preventive nature be conducted there.

It was with great honor and regard that 20 of our WiA members have joined a workshop on Supporting Cancer patients and after being properly trained our members will be able to better serve our community and to volunteer in shifts at the JHB Gen – oncology ward – every week mornings in full support to patients undergoing cancer treatments.
