Mrs. Abraham

safe_image.phpBack in 1857, when women practically didn’t have any rights in society, a group of women in a clothing factory in the US decided to protest against the unfair conditions they worked in… no, I don’t mean, the dirt of the place or even the load of work, but simply the 16 hours they were demanded to work daily for a third of the salary that the men, in the same factory and with the same duties earned – not much to ask right?

Well apparently it was a lot to ask for. Around 130 women were locked inside this factory and burned alive. All that came out of that, at the time, was the sad news on all papers… and a century later, an international day for women established on 8 of March of every year.

I was reading cards

Silvia 3Before coming to Jesus I had my life totally destroyed. I suffered from many spiritual problems as having visions, hearing voices, nightmares, I was afraid of darkness and death. My family was deeply involved with witchcraft. It all started back when my mother was 18 and had repeated panic attacks, screaming and claiming she was going to die.

My granny would take her to the hospital with no avail so she decided to seek for help in the mystic world through card readers able to speak with the spirits and do witchcraft. One medium said my mother was suffering from the spirit of her late father who was missing her and wanted her dead by his side.

HIV and Aids in RSA

6426_largeAn estimated 5.2 million people were living with HIV and AIDS in South Africa in 2008, more than in any other country.1 It is believed that in 2008, over 250,000 South Africans died of AIDS.2

National prevalence is around 11%, with some age groups being particularly affected. Almost one-in-three women aged 25-29, and over a quarter of men aged 30-34, are living with HIV.3

HIV prevalence among those aged two and older also varies by province with the Western Cape (3.8%) and Northern Cape (5.9%) being least affected, and Mpumulanga (15.4%) and KwaZulu-Natal (15.8%) at the upper end of the scale.

HIV/Aids latest statistics in RSA

get_educated-2-3282The statistics discussed here come from two prevalence studies that estimate how many people are living with HIV in South Africa, and two reports on AIDS deaths. Viewed together these sources give an idea of the scale of South Africa’s HIV epidemic. If you are looking for statistics from elsewhere, try our statistics section.

The first section is based on the report of the Department of Health “National HIV and Syphilis Sero-prevalence Survey in South Africa 2007″, published in 2008. This annual study looks at data from antenatal clinics and uses it to estimate HIV prevalence amongst pregnant women.

HIV march

We are inviting you to join us in march this coming December 5th in support to those infected and affected by this pandemic. The march is a symbol but the real protest must be in each one’s heart. To protest alone is not enough if we do not take a stand, we do not educate our friends and children about HIV/Aids. logo4Education alone is not enough… we need to lead them to value their life, to dream for a future and if the price to be paid is abstain, so be it. We need to voice the message of faithfulness and we need to help out those who are not willing to accept AB, to Condomize. Many women are being taken into this wave of destruction and sadness because they are not sure of the faithfulness of their partners and they cannot risk their health and family well being. There is abundance of knowledge and words but lack of action so take action this time and join us in this march.

Spring in your life

springFew Saturdays ago I had a wonderful surprise of having the sun back into our life, so strong, so bright, so warm after this dreadful winter with low temperatures and bad weather.

But you know what? This whole transition marked my year, not physically but spiritually.

It was very captivating to observe the changes in nature and follow closely to each stage of it up until now.

The leaves on trees turned dry and fell off; the lawns looked more like carpets of straw so dried out by the early frost; flower pots were so withered that I could guarantee they would never flourish again; birds were eating dried sticks and branches; poor bees… no flowers to gaze upon.

Rounding up our Awareness Campaign

Durb1It has been a month’s journey, nationwide, sharing the message of awareness and prevention. Our purpose: to lead women to love themselves and to look after their health; our target: each one of you, independent of age, If we have achieved our resust, that is a question that can only be answer by each one of those who have gathered with us during this past month.

However we can celebrate in unison: with your support and participation we have completed a donation of R 50,000 to CANSA and that somehow will benefit either you or your community because part of the funds will be reversed to free scanning and tests. We feel so good when we can help somehow and reach out for those less fortunate.

WiA Singers

DSC_3634Yes, they are all pastors’ wives! But I believe it is interesting to share with you the idea behind the group and above all, our aim with that. When WiA came about, we have set two trademarks: we dress traditional and the ladies sing traditional and popular songs. We are just rewinding the good things of the past as a path to the future; when we sing Miriam Makheba, Brenda Fassie among other divas we are sending an underlined message of empowerment. These women made a name of their own and honored South Africa in times of struggle. They overcame despite all odds, so much more you can do in a season of liberation, freedom, equality. Their songs are appealing to all ages because they symbolize more than just a beat, they recall a cry out for freedom. The same cry out must be in your heart… you must be free to conquer, to go ahead and to impact your surroundings. You can do that if you allow God to show you the way. Our aim: to reach out those who are already part of our UCKG family but also those who are out there, in need of a helping hand. This is WiA all about!

She waited

Raquel .JPGThis is Rachel, a 31-year-old assistant who recently married a 36-year-old pastor last October 31st. When I met Rachel for the first time, I decided to write about her not only because her story is quite unique, but also because it has a very common beginning, which is why it strongly inspired me.

Rachel came to the church when she was only 14. Being born in a Catholic home, Rachel had always believed in God but she and her family suffered a lot, and didn’t know how to use all that faith into solving their problems. Once they heard about the UCKG in Spain, they started to attend and miracles began to happen, one by one. Rachel immediately fell in love with God and decided to give her life back to Him.
